One day, a man approached a wise Guru and asked, “Master, how can I discover my own flaws?”

The Guru replied calmly, “See yourself through the eyes of others.”

Following the Guru’s advice, the man imagined looking at himself from an outsider’s perspective and began reflecting on his own behavior.

After some time, he returned and said, “Master, you were right. I have discovered my greatest weakness.”

The Guru asked, “And what is it?”

The man replied, “My biggest flaw is that I can never refuse anyone. Because of this, I have been deceived many times and often find myself in trouble.”

The Guru smiled gently and said, “What you consider a flaw is actually a virtue. It shows your generosity and kindness. The reason you saw it as a weakness is because you looked at yourself through the eyes of a friend. Now, try seeing yourself through the eyes of an enemy. Become your own critic.”

The man paused and thought deeply. He imagined what those who disliked him might say about him. Slowly, a clearer picture of himself began to emerge.

After a while, he looked at the Guru and said, “Now I understand my real flaw. I am actually very arrogant. Deep inside, I always believe that my opinions are the most reasonable, and I find it difficult to accept views different from my own.”

The Guru nodded with satisfaction and said, “Now you are on the right path. That is how one truly discovers one’s weaknesses. Did Saint Kabir not say that critics should always be kept close and treated with respect? For they cleanse us without soap or water.”

The greatest mirror in life is not praise, but criticism. Friends may show us our strengths, but critics often reveal the truths we fail to see ourselves.
